Find out instantly whether FSD transfers to the new owner — and what it costs if it doesn't.

The three FSD transfer scenarios

  • FSD bought before April 24, 2025: tied to the car's VIN. It stays with the car when it's sold, so the next owner keeps FSD.
  • FSD bought April 24, 2025 – March 31, 2026: covered by Tesla's transfer program, which let owners move FSD to a new Tesla they bought during that window.
  • Teslas bought after February 14, 2026: FSD is subscription-only ($99/month), so there is nothing to transfer. The buyer starts their own subscription.

How to verify FSD on a listing

Ask the seller for a photo of Controls > Software showing "Full Self-Driving Capability", and confirm in the Tesla app after the ownership transfer. A listing that only says "has FSD" might mean an active subscription, which ends when the seller cancels it.

Frequently asked questions

Does FSD transfer to a new owner?

If FSD was purchased outright, it is attached to the car and normally transfers to the next owner. A subscription does not transfer — the buyer has to start their own.

Can I still buy FSD outright?

No. Since February 14, 2026, Tesla sells FSD as a subscription only, at $99 per month in the US.

How much is FSD worth on a used Tesla?

A car with purchased FSD that transfers can be worth a few thousand dollars more than the same car without it, but it depends on the hardware and the market. Never pay a premium for FSD you haven't verified.
