California Tesla Registration Fee Calculator (2026 DMV Fees)
See an itemized estimate of what the California DMV will charge to register your Tesla this year — including the EV-only Road Improvement Fee — whether you just bought it or you're renewing.
What's in a California Tesla registration bill
- Registration fee ($73) and CHP fee ($34): flat fees on every passenger vehicle.
- Vehicle License Fee (VLF): 0.65% of the car's value. The DMV starts from the price you paid and lowers it each year on a fixed schedule — 100% the first year, then 90%, 80%, 70% and so on down to 15% from year 11.
- Transportation Improvement Fee (TIF): $33 to $231 depending on the car's value. Most newer Teslas fall in the $132 ($25,000–$34,999) or $198 ($35,000–$59,999) tier.
- Road Improvement Fee ($121): charged on 2020-and-newer zero-emission vehicles instead of the gas tax. It isn't charged on the first registration of a new car bought from a licensed dealer, so most new Tesla owners first see it at their first renewal.
- County and district fees: small local fees for air quality, freeway call boxes and similar programs, usually $10–$40 in total.
Fees go up on January 1, 2027
The DMV announced CPI increases for 2027: the registration fee rises to $76, the CHP fee to $35, the Road Improvement Fee to $127, and each TIF tier by a few dollars ($35 to $242). The calculator switches to the new amounts on that date.
Why your bill can differ
County fees vary, late renewals add penalties, and special plates cost extra. Your DMV renewal notice is the exact amount — use this estimate to budget and to check that a notice looks right.
Frequently asked questions
How much is Tesla registration in California?
For a Tesla bought for $45,000, the first renewal is about $714: $73 registration, $34 CHP, about $263 VLF, a $198 Transportation Improvement Fee, the $121 Road Improvement Fee and roughly $25 in county fees. The cost falls each year as the VLF value drops.
Why do EVs pay a Road Improvement Fee in California?
Electric cars don't pay gas tax, which funds road repairs. Since July 2020, 2020-and-newer zero-emission vehicles pay a Road Improvement Fee at renewal instead. It is indexed to inflation: $121 in 2026 and $127 from January 2027.
Is the Vehicle License Fee tax-deductible?
The VLF is based on the car's value, so it can count as a personal property tax if you itemize deductions on your federal return. The DMV lists the VLF separately on your renewal notice. Ask a tax professional about your situation.
Does the Model Y cost more to register than the Model 3?
Only because it usually costs more to buy. The VLF and TIF depend on the price you paid, not on the model.
