Tesla Hardware Checker — HW3, HW4 or AI5?

Pick a model and build year to see which Autopilot computer a Tesla most likely has — HW3, HW4 or newer — and what that means for FSD and insurance discounts.

Hardware Version Checker
Find out which hardware version your Tesla has — and whether it supports supervised or fully unsupervised FSD.

Why your hardware version matters

  • FSD features: the newest FSD versions are built for HW4 first; HW3 cars run a reduced version or get features later.
  • Insurance: Lemonade's 50% FSD-mile discount requires HW4 or newer.
  • Resale value: HW4 cars with FSD generally hold their value better.

How to confirm it on the car

Build year is a strong guide, but changeover dates overlapped. To be sure, open Controls > Software > Additional Vehicle Information on the touchscreen, which lists the FSD computer as AI3 (HW3) or AI4 (HW4).

Frequently asked questions

How do I know if my Tesla has HW3 or HW4?

Go to Controls > Software > Additional Vehicle Information on the touchscreen. AI3 means Hardware 3; AI4 means Hardware 4.

Can HW3 be upgraded to HW4?

Tesla has said owners who purchased FSD on HW3 will get a computer upgrade if HW3 can't support unsupervised FSD. HW4 also uses different cameras, so it isn't a simple swap — ask Tesla service about current options for your car.
