4 min readBy the FSDClarity team

Registering a Tesla in California typically costs about $500–$900 a year for a newer car, depending mostly on what you paid for it. The biggest pieces are the Vehicle License Fee (0.65% of the car's value) and the Transportation Improvement Fee, plus a $121 Road Improvement Fee that only zero-emission vehicles pay.

Here's every fee on a California Tesla registration, with real examples and the increases coming on January 1, 2027.

The Vehicle License Fee

The VLF is 0.65% of your Tesla's value. The DMV starts with the price you paid and lowers it each year on a fixed schedule: 100% in the first year, then 90%, 80%, 70%, 60%, 50%, 40%, 30%, 25%, 20%, and 15% from the 11th year on. On a $45,000 Tesla, that's $293 in year one and $263 at the first renewal.

The Transportation Improvement Fee

The TIF depends on the vehicle's value:

Vehicle valueTIF (2026)
Under $5,000$33
$5,000–$24,999$66
$25,000–$34,999$132
$35,000–$59,999$198
$60,000 and up$231

Most new Model 3s and Model Ys fall in the $198 tier at first and drop to $132 a few years later.

The Road Improvement Fee

Electric cars don't pay gas tax, so since July 2020 California has charged 2020-and-newer zero-emission vehicles a Road Improvement Fee at renewal — $121 in 2026. It isn't charged on the first registration of a new car bought from a dealer, so new Tesla owners usually first see it on their first renewal. It's adjusted for inflation every year.

Model 3 RWD$42,000about $603about $697
Model Y Long Range$48,000about $642about $732
Model Y Performance$58,000about $707about $790

These include $25 in county fees and exclude sales tax. Use the calculator above with your own price for a closer number.

Sales tax is separate

When you buy, you also pay sales or use tax on the purchase price — California's base rate is 7.25%, and local add-ons push it above 10% in some cities. Tesla collects it at delivery for new cars. For a private-party used purchase, you pay use tax to the DMV when you transfer the title.

Fees go up on January 1, 2027

The DMV has announced inflation increases taking effect January 1, 2027:

Fee20262027
Registration fee$73$76
CHP fee$34$35
Road Improvement Fee$121$127
TIF tiers$33–$231$35–$242

The VLF rate stays at 0.65%.

Can you deduct your registration?

The VLF portion is based on value, so it can count as a personal property tax on your federal return if you itemize. The other fees aren't deductible. Your DMV renewal notice lists the VLF separately — ask a tax professional about your situation.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my Tesla registration so expensive?

Because the VLF and TIF are based on value, and Teslas are worth more than an average car. EVs also pay the $121 Road Improvement Fee. The bill drops every year as the VLF value depreciates.

Is the Model Y registration fee higher than the Model 3?

Only because the Model Y usually costs more to buy. The fees depend on price, not the model.

What if I'm late renewing?

The DMV adds late penalties that grow the longer you wait, on top of the regular fees. Renew online before the due date on your notice to avoid them.

The bottom line

A newer Tesla in California costs roughly $600–$800 a year to register, falling as the car ages. Plug your purchase price into the California Registration Fee Calculator for an itemized estimate — it switches to the 2027 fees automatically on January 1.
