Battery warranty status

Likely covered

Your Model 3 Long Range is inside Tesla's 8-year / 120,000-mile Battery & Drive Unit warranty. If the pack fails or drops below 70% capacity, Tesla should repair or replace it at no cost.

Cheaper options than a full new pack

  • Module repair at an independent EV shop: about $2,000–$7,000, when only one module has failed.
  • Refurbished or used packs from EV specialists usually cost less than new, with a shorter warranty.
  • The 12V / low-voltage battery is a separate, small battery — usually about $200–$400 installed, not thousands.

The warranty usually pays first

Every new Tesla has an 8-year Battery & Drive Unit warranty with a mileage cap — 100,000 miles for Model 3 and Model Y RWD, 120,000 for Long Range and Performance, and 150,000 for Model S, Model X and Cybertruck. Tesla repairs or replaces the pack if it fails or falls below 70% capacity within that period. The warranty stays with the car when it's sold.

Most packs outlast the warranty

Tesla reports Model S and Model X packs keep about 88% of their capacity after 200,000 miles on average. Full pack replacements outside the warranty are uncommon — which is why a used Tesla with high mileage isn't automatically a battery risk.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a Tesla battery cost to replace?

Out of warranty, roughly $10,000 to $16,000 for a Model 3 or Model Y and $12,000 to $21,000 for a Model S or Model X, installed. Module-level repairs at independent shops can cost $2,000 to $7,000 when only part of the pack has failed.

Does the Tesla battery warranty transfer to a new owner?

Yes. The warranty runs from the original delivery date and stays with the car, so a used buyer gets whatever years and miles are left.

How much is a Tesla 12V battery?

The low-voltage battery that runs the car's electronics is separate from the main pack and usually costs about $200 to $400 installed.

Is it worth replacing a Tesla battery or buying another car?

On an older, low-value Tesla, a $12,000+ pack can cost more than the car is worth, so a module repair, refurbished pack or selling the car may make more sense. On a newer car with good condition, replacement usually pays off.
