Tesla Unsupervised FSD: Where It Actually Stands

7 min readBy the FSDClarity team

As of 27 October 2026: Tesla's target for unsupervised FSD in customer-owned cars is Q2 2027, and only for cars enrolled in its managed Robotaxi fleet inside existing service areas. No customer car runs unsupervised FSD today. HW3 cars are excluded.

That's a much narrower promise than "your Tesla will drive itself", and the gap between the two is what this page is about.

What Tesla actually said

On the Q3 2026 earnings call (21 October 2026), VP of AI Ashok Elluswamy answered a shareholder question about when unsupervised FSD reaches customer cars. The answer had three parts, and the second two matter more than the first:

  1. Timing: around Q2 2027.
  2. Software: tied to FSD V15, not the current v14.3 line.
  3. Scope: owners would be adding their own cars to Tesla's managed Robotaxi fleet. Qualifying cars would have to meet geofencing and fleet-management requirements.

Point three is the one most coverage glosses over. What's being described is not a car that drives you anywhere unsupervised. It's a way to put your car to work inside the areas where Tesla already runs Robotaxi, under Tesla's operational control. Whether you can sit in the back seat with no hands on anything on a road of your choosing is a separate question that Tesla has not answered.

Electrek's report treats this as another delay and a narrowing — the language moved from "end of next year" to the middle of next year, with the fleet condition attached.

Why "unsupervised" doesn't mean what most people assume

Three distinct things get called the same thing:

What it isStatus
FSD (Supervised) — your car, you watch the road, hands readyShipping now, $99/month
Robotaxi — Tesla's own cars, no driver, fixed service areasRunning in six US cities
Unsupervised FSD in your car — your car drives with nobody responsibleNot announced for general use

The Q2 2027 target sits between rows two and three: your car, Tesla's service area, Tesla's fleet rules. An owner outside a Robotaxi city gets nothing from it, which is most owners.

Where Robotaxi actually runs

Unsupervised driving is real — just not in cars you own. Tesla runs driverless service in six cities: Austin, Dallas, Houston, Miami, Orlando and Tampa.

Approximate service areas as of late October 2026:

CityService area
Austin~272 sq mi
Houston~254 sq mi
Dallas~81 sq mi
Miami~31 sq mi
Orlando~26 sq mi
Tampa~24 sq mi

These figures come from third-party trackers, not Tesla — the company confirms expansions without publishing boundaries, hours or fleet counts. Houston's zone grew roughly tenfold on 26 October. Treat the numbers as indicative.

Area is growing faster than the fleet. One tracker counted only about 34 driverless Model Ys covering Houston's 254 square miles. A large geofence with a small fleet means long waits, not broad availability — worth remembering when expansion announcements are framed as progress.

Tesla has said Dallas is next for Cybercab rides in November, with more cities and 24/7 operation targeted by year-end.

What this means for your car

If you have HW4 or AI4: you're the audience for the Q2 2027 target, if you live in a Robotaxi city and want to enrol your car in the fleet. Nothing changes about how you drive today.

If you have HW3: Tesla has acknowledged HW3 cannot support unsupervised FSD. It has said owners who bought FSD will get a computer upgrade if one is needed, but has never committed to a date, and no retrofit is available to buy. On the Q3 call Tesla passed over the top-voted shareholder question asking exactly this. If you're on HW3 and counting on an upgrade, treat it as unresolved.

If you're shopping: no consumer Tesla has AI5 as of October 2026, so HW4/AI4 is the newest you can buy. Our hardware checker identifies what a given car has, and HW3 vs HW4 covers the practical differences.

The track record

Any date from Tesla on autonomy needs context. Tesla said in 2019 it would have a million robotaxis on the road by 2020. Coast-to-coast autonomous driving was promised for 2017. "Next year" has been the answer for most of the last several years, and the target has moved every time.

What's different now is that driverless cars genuinely are carrying passengers in six cities — that part stopped being a promise. What hasn't changed is the pattern of the next milestone sitting roughly a year out.

So the useful reading of Q2 2027 isn't a date to plan around. It's a statement of direction, with a scope that got narrower rather than wider.

What would have to happen for Q2 2027 to hold

  • FSD V15 ships and is materially better than v14.3. The current line is still working through pothole avoidance, broader reasoning and driver-monitoring improvements.
  • Regulatory clearance for owner-operated vehicles in a commercial fleet, which is a different approval from Tesla running its own cars.
  • A fleet-enrolment product: insurance, liability, maintenance standards, revenue split. None of this has been published.
  • The HW3 question gets answered, or a large part of the existing fleet is simply left out.

None of these is impossible. All four landing within about two quarters would be unusual.

What to do now

  • Don't pay for FSD expecting unsupervised driving. Subscribe because supervised FSD is worth $99 a month to you now, or don't. Is FSD worth it runs that math.
  • Don't buy a car for a promised upgrade. Buy the hardware that does what you want today.
  • If you're on HW3, factor in that it won't reach unsupervised FSD and that the upgrade has no date.
  • If you're in a Robotaxi city, try the service. It's the clearest picture available of where this is heading.

Frequently asked questions

When will Tesla FSD be fully self-driving?

Tesla's current target is Q2 2027 for unsupervised FSD in customer cars, limited to cars enrolled in its managed Robotaxi fleet inside existing service areas. There's no announced date for unsupervised driving anywhere you like.

Can I use FSD unsupervised today?

No. FSD (Supervised) requires you to watch the road with your hands ready, and the car monitors your eyes. Only Tesla's own Robotaxi vehicles operate without a driver, in six cities.

Will HW3 get unsupervised FSD?

No. Tesla has acknowledged HW3 can't support it. A computer upgrade has been mentioned for owners who bought FSD, but no date or price has been set and nothing is available to buy.

What is FSD V15?

The next major version, which Tesla has tied to unsupervised capability in customer cars. The shipping line is v14.3. Nothing has been published about V15's release date or what it adds.

Which cities have Tesla Robotaxi?

Austin, Dallas, Houston, Miami, Orlando and Tampa, with Dallas named for Cybercab rides in November and more cities targeted by year-end.

Would I be able to earn money from my Tesla in the Robotaxi fleet?

That's the implication of enrolling your car, but Tesla hasn't published terms — no revenue split, insurance arrangement or maintenance requirements. Treat it as an idea, not a product.

The bottom line

Unsupervised FSD is real in Tesla's own cars in six cities, and targeted for Q2 2027 in customer cars — inside those same service areas, as part of Tesla's fleet.

For the large majority of owners, who don't live in a Robotaxi city, the honest answer is that there's no announced date for their car driving itself unsupervised. Decide on FSD based on what supervised FSD does for you today, and treat Q2 2027 as a direction rather than a delivery date.
