Do You Need a Front License Plate on a Tesla in California?

4 min readBy the FSDClarity team

Yes. California requires a front license plate on a Tesla, the same as almost every other passenger car. There's no exemption for Teslas or for cars without a factory plate mount. Plenty of Teslas drive around California without one, but you can be ticketed for it.

Here's what the law says, what a ticket costs, and the least ugly ways to mount a front plate.

What California law says

California Vehicle Code section 5200 says that when the DMV issues two license plates, one must be displayed on the front of the vehicle and one on the rear. Passenger cars, including every Tesla model, are issued two plates. Only vehicles issued a single plate — like motorcycles and trailers — are exempt.

Section 5201 adds that plates must be securely fastened, clearly visible and not covered by tinted or reflective materials. Tesla doesn't get special treatment because the car's nose wasn't designed for a plate.

What happens if you drive without a front plate

  • The ticket: a front plate violation is an infraction. With court fees and assessments, it commonly comes to around $200.
  • Fix-it ticket: officers often write it as a correctable violation. If you install the plate and get the ticket signed off by an officer, you usually pay only a small dismissal fee (around $25) instead of the full fine.
  • Parking enforcement: some cities issue parking tickets for missing plates on parked cars.
  • Enforcement varies a lot. Many owners go years without a ticket, but it's also a common reason for a stop that leads to other tickets.

Cleanest ways to mount a front plate on a Tesla

Tesla's front plate bracket

Tesla supplies a front license plate bracket for states that require one — ask at delivery if it's not in the frunk, or order it from Tesla. It attaches to the lower bumper and is designed for the car's shape.

Adhesive mounts

Third-party adhesive brackets stick to the bumper without drilling. They're easy to remove when you sell the car, but pick a reputable brand and clean the surface well, because a cheap one can fall off on the freeway.

Tow-hook mounts

Some mounts screw into the front tow-hook receiver, so no drilling or adhesive is needed. The plate sits slightly to one side and can be removed in seconds.

Things to avoid

  • Covering front cameras or sensors. Newer Teslas have a front bumper camera on some models — make sure the plate doesn't block it.
  • Plate covers or tinted frames. These are illegal in California if they obscure the plate.
  • Drilling into the bumper unless you're sure you'll keep the plate on for good.

Frequently asked questions

Do new Teslas come with front plates in California?

Teslas delivered in California get two plates from the DMV — front and rear. Tesla handles registration for most direct purchases, and you mount the front plate after delivery.

Can I put my front plate on the dashboard?

No. California requires the plate to be mounted on the front of the car, not displayed inside the windshield.

California allows approved digital license plates in place of the rear plate. You still need a regular front plate.

Does a missing front plate affect insurance?

No. A front plate ticket is an equipment violation, not a moving violation, so it doesn't add points to your driving record — the most important insurance rating factor in California.

The bottom line

California requires a front plate on every Tesla. The ticket is usually around $200, or much less if it's written as a fix-it ticket and you correct it. The simplest fix is Tesla's own front plate bracket or a tow-hook mount you can remove when you sell the car.
