Tesla Insurance is a solid option in California — especially for newer Teslas — but it isn't automatically the cheapest, and it works differently here than in other states. California doesn't allow insurers to price policies on real-time driving behavior, so the Safety Score that makes Tesla Insurance cheap for careful drivers elsewhere doesn't set your California rate.
Here's how it works in California, what owners like and dislike about it, and who should pick it.
How Tesla Insurance works in California
California was the first state where Tesla sold insurance, but it's also the most different:
- No Safety Score pricing. Your premium is based on traditional factors — driving record, annual mileage, years licensed, ZIP code, coverage and the car. California's Proposition 103 sets those rules for every insurer.
- Tesla-focused repairs. Claims are handled with repairs at Tesla-approved body shops using Tesla parts.
- Managed in the Tesla app. Quotes, policy changes, ID cards and claims are all in the app.
- Tesla cars only. You can't put a non-Tesla vehicle on the same policy, which can make it awkward for multi-car households.
In other states, Tesla Insurance has moved to Safety Score 3.0, which only scores the miles you drive without driver-assist features. None of that affects California policies.
What Tesla Insurance costs in California
Estimated monthly full-coverage cost for a clean-record driver with a 2025 model, from our Tesla Insurance Cost Estimator:
| Tesla | Tesla Insurance | State Farm | GEICO |
|---|---|---|---|
| Model 3 | about $158 | about $209 | about $245 |
| Model Y | about $238 | about $290 | about $284 |
In our estimates Tesla Insurance often comes in lowest for newer cars, but individual quotes vary a lot. Some owners — especially those with a recent accident, a young driver on the policy, or a high-claim ZIP code — find another insurer cheaper. For the full comparison, see the cheapest insurance for a Tesla in California.
Pros
- Repairs done the Tesla way. Tesla-approved shops and OEM parts mean fewer fights about how your car gets fixed.
- Competitive pricing on newer Teslas, where other insurers price in high repair costs.
- Fast quotes and changes in the app, no agent needed.
- No driving data in your price. For some California owners, that's a plus — your rate won't move because of one hard-braking event.
Cons
- No Safety Score discount in California, so careful drivers don't get the big savings owners in Texas or Illinois see.
- Tesla vehicles only. Households with a second, non-Tesla car need two insurers, and lose the multi-car discount.
- Repair wait times. Tesla-approved body shops can be booked weeks out in busy areas, and parts delays can stretch repairs.
- Claims-handling concerns. Owner reports are mixed, and in October 2025 the California Department of Insurance filed accusations against Tesla's insurance companies alleging delays and unreasonable denials on hundreds of claims. As of October 2026 we haven't seen a public resolution — check the latest status and read recent California owner experiences before you switch.
- Renewal increases. California auto rates have climbed across the industry since 2023, so check your renewal price instead of letting it auto-renew.
Who should choose Tesla Insurance in California
It's a good fit if you have a newer Tesla, a clean record, only Tesla vehicles in the household, and you care about Tesla-approved repairs.
Look elsewhere if you have a non-Tesla car to insure too, you want to bundle with home or renters insurance, or your Tesla Insurance quote comes in well above another insurer's.
Tips before you buy
- Get a Tesla Insurance quote in the app and two or three others with identical coverage.
- Match liability limits — California's minimum is $30,000/$60,000/$15,000, but most Tesla owners should carry much more.
- Check the rental car limit, since Tesla repairs can take weeks.
- Re-quote at every renewal.
Frequently asked questions
Does Tesla Insurance use the Safety Score in California?
No. California doesn't allow pricing based on real-time driving behavior, so Tesla Insurance uses traditional rating factors in the state.
Is Tesla Insurance cheaper than State Farm in California?
In our estimates, often yes for newer Model 3s and Model Ys, but not for every driver. Compare quotes with the same coverage.
Is Tesla Insurance in trouble in California?
In October 2025 the California Department of Insurance filed formal accusations over claims handling, which could lead to a hearing and penalties. We haven't seen a public resolution as of October 2026. Tesla Insurance is still selling policies in California, but check the latest news before you buy.
Can I insure a non-Tesla car with Tesla Insurance?
No. Tesla Insurance only covers Tesla vehicles.
The bottom line
Tesla Insurance is worth a quote for every California Tesla owner, and it's often among the cheapest for newer cars with clean-record drivers. Without the Safety Score it's just another insurer here, though — so compare it head to head before you switch.
